This volume, how¬ ever, does not purport to follow academic theory but strives to be useful in developing ideas about the Japanese language and things Japanese. Some Japanese expert linguists might dis¬ agree with the transcription of authentic Japa¬ nese into imperfect roma-ji. The aims of this publication are to motivate foreigners to learn to speak Japanese using roma-ji and to provide them with cultural information as well. It is important to show you that Japanese can be transliterated into Roman Charactersroma-ji, and that all kinds of Japanese can be written in ka-na, the symbols representing basic syllables within the range of pronunciation for all educated Japanese. Consequently she became familiar with Japa¬ nese native pronunciation and also with native customs and aspects of Japanese culture diffe¬ rent from her own. She could also be corrected at first hand by those around her and thus benefitted from increasing numbers of live situations. She could also in this way overcome her hesitation in pronouncing unfamil2 Second, it became imperative not only for her but also for me to transcribe her favorite ex¬ pressions into Roman Characters (rOma-ji) which could easily be pronounced anytime and any¬ where she liked.

My first priority was to give her reassurance and to encourage her to express her feelings and to risk making mistakes. I be¬ came her teacher and was determined to make use of every means possible to improve her Japanese. However, she was extremely eager to make progress in Japanese so that she could partici¬ pate in a recitation contest held in Japan. But be¬ cause of her many activities as an exchange stu¬ dent, she spoke in her native language which was not beneficial to learning Japanese. I could see how hard it was going to be for her to communicate in “living Japanese.” She lived together with her Japanese mother and father and enjoyed life in Japan. She was not able to speak any Japanese except for “watashi-no ni-hon-no o-to-san to o-ka-san”my Japanese father and mother. It was when I was teaching English in a senior high school that an American girl came to our school as a foreign exchange student.
